Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
This is a four week flex course about the care and keeping of an Axolotl. Flex classes do not have live meetings.

In this flex course students will learn about where axolotls live in the wild and also about how to take care of them in captivity from egg to adult. I personally raise and rescue axolotls. Throughout this course I will use written lessons, live videos, photos and my personal axolotls to teach students about these amazing creatures.

Students will interact with each other through questions posted in the classroom, and also will be given puzzles and quizzes throughout the class to not only test their knowledge, but to make learning fun. They are to work together with their classmates to complete these worksheets. Students also will be assigned to do some little projects of making their own axolotl. They can do this in anyway they would like (painting, drawing, play-doh, ect). They will share their craft projects with the other students.

Students are also highly encouraged to ask any questions regarding the care and keeping of axolotls that we may not have directly covered in class.

Here is a breakdown of what will be taught each week.

Week 1 we will talk about what an axolotl is and where they live in the wild. We will also talk about some of the cool things about Axolotls that make them so unique. This week will not have any videos but will have pictures. I do not have any live videos of them in the wild unfortunately to add.
Week 2 we will talk about the beginning of the lifecycle eggs to larvae. This will include the cycle of the egg, how to care for eggs and larvae and also how to prepare your own food for your larvae.
Week 3 we will talk about how to set up and prepare your tank for your axolotl. Students will be shown a video of how to do water tests to make sure the tank water is safe for them. They will also see pictures of various tank set ups and ways to keep the water temperature appropriate for them.
Week 4 we will talk about adult axolotls, morphs, illnesses and also they will learn about how to raise some food for their adults!

Throughout the course students will meet some of my axolotls and will learn about some of their rescue stories. This can be a little sad, as we talk about the condition they were in when they were rescued, but all of the stories have a happy ending.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
While talking about my personal axolotls I will share their rescue stories. A couple of the stories are a little sad because the axolotl was neglected and injured, but they do have a happy ending! Please note the hours per week of work will vary a little per student, depending on the activities they choose to make. Videos are uploaded to you tube, they are set for kids, so there are no ads with the video. They are listed as unlisted so students will only be able to view them with the link listed in the classroom each week.
Supply List
Students will be doing crafts of their choice, so they can use supplies you have within your house. I will be posting some worksheets for the students, if you can print these that would be helpful, but if not the students can just write their answers on another piece of paper.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
  • Youtube
Sources
Some of the videos will be posted as a youtube link, as the files are to large for me to upload into the classroom. These are unlisted videos, made by me, for kids. That way there are no ads or anything in the video that is inappropriate for students to view.
