The Care and Keeping of a Sulcata Tortoise

Average rating:4.9Number of reviews:(549)
In this one time course students will learn how to care for a pet Sulcata tortoise.

Class experience

US Grade 4 - 7
I rescue multiple animals. I currently own two Sulcata tortoises. I love to teach children the importance of proper care of their beloved pets.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be shown a few photos of what can happen to a Sulcata if they are neglected. These photos are not gruesome in any way. The photos will show how a shell can become disfigured without proper UV lights, ect. We may also talk briefly about my tortoises and my friends tortoise rescue story. This can be sad to some children, but does have a very happy ending. A brief summary of the stories:

One of mine was left abandoned in someone's yard in the fall, she would not have survived an Idaho winter on her own.

My friend's rescue spent almost 20 years living in a box with no light, attention or water. His shell is severely disfigured (one of the photos that will be shown) and he has had to have some surgeries due to this neglect.

I share these stories to help emphasize the importance of care. I do not focus on the stories, but do mention them and their happy endings of how well they are doing now. Showing that love and care can make their lives better.
