This class, in conjunction with "The Campy Camp: Having Summer Fun with Fun Words", explores the particular way rhyming words, phrases, musical lyrics and poetry help in the creative writing and storytelling process. Students will learn, through extremely interactive, enjoyable and engaging lessons, how to recognize words that rhyme based on their spelling, their meaning and how they're used in a sentence, idea or thought. Here is how each class (over two weeks) will be broken down, with each 40-minute time period organized into four ten-minute blocks that build upon learning and understanding of our core rhyming concepts: Intros/Class Expectations, Brainstorming Exercise, Interactive & Visual Word Play Game, Comments/Sharing/Storytelling Class 1: Understanding Rhyming --How do rhymes work? --What constitutes a rhyme? --Where do we recognize rhymes? --Why do we remember them? Class 2: Rhymes in Storytelling - Poems & Fables Class 3: Rhymes in Storytelling - Short Stories & Books Class 4: Rhymes in Songs & Lyrics Class 5: Rhymes in Greeting Cards & Advertisements Class 6: Writing Our Own Rhymes & Sharing Our Creations Each successive class would add on to what the students are learning while also introducing new concepts and ideas that help get their Go Brains going and growing (how rhymes work in poetic form, in short story form, in musical form, etc.). By the end of the sixth class, they will be truly "well-versed" when it comes to creating their own ideas for poems, stories, song lyrics and other forms of rhyming within the world of language arts!
Learning Goals
Students will improve upon their understanding of word play -- in particular how words and/or phrases that rhyme can be combined with alliteration, onomatopoeia, homonyms, anagrams, puns and more -- to form the basis for creative writing, storytelling and brainstorming ideas. This course will enhance their reading skills, their writing skills, their thinking skills and help them become even more creative in their language arts efforts.
