"The Book Scavenger": An "Elements of Critical Thinking" Literature Circle Club

Students will read "The Book Scavenger" by New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Chambliss and participate in a Literature Circle based book club discussion, rotating responsibilities and presenting their findings to the group.

Class experience

US Grade 4 - 7
This specific course is geared toward higher level thinking.  Each literature circle role is directly connected to the 11 elements of critical thinking: big ideas, rules, trends, patterns, language of the discipline, ethics, relationships over time, details, unanswered questions, across disciplines and multiple perspectives.  

Week 1:  Introductions to one another, the book/author and to Literature Circles and expectations.  
Read Chapters 1-6 in preparation for class.  No additional assignment due on Week 1.  

Week 2:  Read Chapters 7 - 10 and complete your job assignment in preparation for class discussion.  

Week 2:  Read Chapters 11 - 15 and complete your job assignment in preparation for class discussion. 

Week 4:  Read Chapters 16 - 21 and complete your job assignment in preparation for class discussion. 

Week 5:  Read Chapters 22 - 28 and complete your job assignment in preparation for class discussion. 

Week 6:   Read Chapters 35 - 39 and complete your job assignment in preparation for class discussion. 

Week 7:  Read Chapters 40 - Author's Note and complete your job assignment in preparation for class discussion. 
Homework Offered
The student will read approximately 43 pages per week and complete his/her "job" in order to be ready to present to the group each week.

Assessments Offered
Informal/observational assessment and feedback are available upon request.
