Class Experience
This class will cover the history of the Black Death from its arrival in Eurasia in the mid-13th century to its spread across Europe. Special attention will be given to the cultural and political reactions of European nations. Topics that will be covered include: how/why the plague spread, plague doctors, 13th-century medical science, plague art (such as the Dance of Death depicted in the image to this class), plague lecture, religious responses, and political consequences. Students will learn about general European history, art, culture, and politics.
I have advanced degrees in history (a M.A. and M.T.S.) and I have been teaching this topic for the past six years.
No homework required for the class itself, but assignments are available upon request.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Assessments available upon request.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
We will be discussing the death of millions of people. We will also be reading primary source material which describes the plague and examining the religious response to this disaster.
