In this 5 week class students will explore an introduction to the Baby-Sitters Club series as they explore their way through book 1 (Kristy's Big Idea). Students will participate in creative babysitting themed activities, and discussions surrounding our reading. Each week students will complete english language and creative activities relevant to the assigned chapters. Students will continue to develop reading skills and comprehension. Throughout the course students will develop english language skills including but not limited to; summarizing, use of key points, making predictions, making inferences, homophones and enhancing vocabulary.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology. Additionally, I have had significant experience working with school aged children in a variety of capacities including in aquatics, as well as facilitating of small group reading centres and reading comprehension skill building in both classroom and childcare settings during my experience as a traditional and non-traditional educator.
Students are expected to read the assigned chapters each week so they are prepared for the activities and discussions in class. Homework Schedule: Pre-Class -- Chapters 1-3 Week 1 -- Chapters 4-6 Week 2 -- Chapters 7-9 Week 3 -- Chapters 10-12 Week 4 -- Chapters 13-15
Students will require the following materials each week: their copy of the Baby-Sitters Club Book 1 (Kristy's Big Idea), blank paper, pencil, coloured pencils/crayons in addition to ensuring the weekly worksheets and materials are printed and accessible. The following supplies will be required for the associated weeks: Week 2: Empty toilet paper roll, coloured construction paper, scissors, glue Week 5: Coloured construction paper, scissors, glue
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learners will be assessed throughout the course to determine learners abilities and understanding. Students will be assessed through verbal responses and interactions with the teacher in order to guide the class and determine level of understanding. Additionally student work and worksheets will be reviewed and checks for understanding completed. Upon request at completion of the course, parents will receive a written report regarding their students progress as well as strengths and suggested areas of improvement.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
During weeks 2 and 5 students will require scissors to create the related projects, it is recommended that parents ensure safe scissor practices and assist any student who may require help. The option to cut out materials ahead of class time would also remove the need to scissors if a parent is unable to supervise during class time.
