The Art of Multiplication: Learning by Building using Minecraft

Class Experience:

Students learning multiplication can find the old method of times table drills boring. Then, those students who are unable to memorize all of their facts find themselves scrambling to apply these facts to their math work. Therefore, learning different ways to multiply without relying on rote memorization is the way to go for most learners.

We will use our review of multiplication facts to create project based learning activities. We will start creating projects using educational learning platforms such as Minecraft, Nearpod.com, and end with our take away project of building a city called Metropolis. We will begin using arrays and other strategies to complete a project where students have the choice to design a city, house, or school on poster board showing their multiplication arrays and calculations. We will also use online games such as Kahoot! To build understanding and application of these important math skills. Please refer to the Class Syllabus for a breakdown of each week of classes and objectives. Enrollment is for grades 2-5. Late enrollment is allowed for this course.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to multiply using different methods of multiplication and creating mini projects that lead to a culminating project based learning experience.
