The Art in Science is a unique program developed by a scientist and artist to enrich children in various scientific concepts. In the program, the kids learn various science topics with hands-on activities that turn into interesting artworks pleasing to the eye and intriguing to the mind. In every chemistry lesson, we will study a new concept in one of the chemistry areas: organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry. We will perform an experiment that will end up being an artwork. Subjects covered are absorption, chromatography, chemical reaction, state of matter, polarity diffusion, and more. Unit 1 - Chemistry Fun Lesson 1 State of Matter (sticky ice) Lesson 2 Absorption (salt painting) Lesson 3 Chromatography (butterflies) Lesson 4 Chemical reaction (balloon experiment) Lesson 5 Oil and water (fireworks in a glass) Unit 2 Lesson 6 Diffusion (candy art) Lesson 7 Oobleck Lesson 8 Walking water - capillary movement Lesson 9 Biochemistry (elephant toothpaste) Lesson 10 Atoms and molecules Unit 3 Lesson 11 Corn plastic Lesson 12 Squeaky clean pennies Lesson 13 Got chalk? Lesson 14 Soda Float Lesson 15 Ice Cream
Learning Goals
Students will understand what is Chemistry and be exposed to different areas of chemistry (organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, physical chemistry) and a combination of them.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Doctoral Degree in Science from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
My name is Orna and I am a scientist and an artist from the San Francisco Bay Area. I am an experienced scientist and educator with a demonstrated history of working in science educational curriculum development. Skilled in developing interdisciplinary educational programs for kids.
I always remember myself sketching and drawing. As a child, all my notebooks were decorated and framed with designs in black and white or color. Every empty envelope or scrap of paper immediately filled up with sketches, and a visit to the art store was, and still is, better than one to the candy store.
I hold a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biology, and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, followed by post-doctorate research at UC Berkeley and Stanford University, where I conducted Bioinformatics research. After years of investigating human hormones, I decided to dedicate my time to develop special curriculum to enrich kids in science.
I developed the The Art in Science to instill love of science in kids (ages 4-12) through an innovative curriculum that enriches kids in various scientific disciplines, using hands-on experiments that turn into artworks pleasing to the eyes and intriguing to the mind.
