Explore the artistic development of animation from the 1900s-today through the Walt Disney Studios! #creative

Class experience

Students will learn about the development of animation from its inceptions as an artform through to the present and be able to discuss the history of animation as a whole and at the Disney studios. Students will be able to discuss key technologies behind animation, how animation started, what significant advancements Disney made in animation, and the history of the Disney studios.
I have my MA in Art History from the University of Colorado at Boulder where I focused on animation and its interactions with art history for my master's thesis. I have taught a version of this course twice at the collegiate level for undergraduate students. This is a very unique course, in that it is not something traditionally covered by either art or film. Therefore, I offer a very different perspective on the development of art in the twentieth century through animation.
Homework Offered
Students will be assigned small weekly assignments that, generally, ask them to view a handful of shorts in preparation for the following class and take a few notes on what they see.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students are evaluated through class participation and engagement with weekly assignments. Grading available upon request.
Grades Offered
It is highly recommended that students have access to a Disney+ account, as many of the shorts and films we are discussing and watching are available there.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will be discussing World War II and the Nazis during Week 5.
