Description

Class Experience

Upon completion of this course student will be able to:
-describe the purpose and methods of taxonomy
-generate a dichotomous key
-describe the characteristics of organisms in the following animal phyla: Porifera, Cnidaria, Annelida, Molluska, Arthropoda, Echinodermata, Chordata
-compare and contrast phyla organisms' physiological methods of circulation, movement, digestion, nervous or sensory systems and reproduction
My love of the ocean and all of it's creatures began in at the aquarium. Growing up near Chicago, it was the only way I could experience, first hand, the magic of life below the sea. Once I became an aquarist and educator, I understood the importance of communicating to patrons the fragility and uniqueness of each organism. I created this class to teach students not only the form and function of marine life, but also how to creatively share their knowledge with others.
Students will have weekly web quests and discussion questions posted to the classroom 1 week prior to the beginning of each live class.
 1 file available upon enrollment
One page note-taking handouts will be supplied 24 hours prior to the class meeting.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be assessed using weekly assignments posted in the classroom (80pts total), weekly discussion board participation (20 points total) and Phyla Info-graphic Project (100 points). Weekly instructor feed back will be submitted to students via the Outschool messaging app and classroom. The rubric for the Phyla Info-graphic Project will be posted upon class enrollment.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
