Class Experience

This is a highly-interactive, discussion-based class that encourages student engagement and conversation. I will structure the class by using a Google Slides presentation to document the key events and moments of Taylor's Presidency, while also providing significant time for student questions and input during the lesson.

I will also ask the students broader, open-ended questions that task them to think critically and to make connections to current events and contemporary America.

In order to ensure that our discussion remains as orderly as can be expected, and so that every student gets a chance to contribute, this class is capped on the smaller side (8 students).

Topics related to Taylor's Presidency that will be covered in the class include:

- Taylor and Slavery: What was Taylor's relationship with the issue of slavery?
- The Election of 1848: Why was Taylor able to win this election? What made Taylor a likeable candidate?
- The Clayton-Bulwer Treaty: Taylor negotiates an important agreement with Great Britain that further strengthens the relationship between the two countries.
- The Compromise of 1850: What was Taylor's role in negotiating this major compromise on the issue of slavery?
- Taylor's Death: President Taylor's death just over a year into his term is clouded in mystery. What exactly happened?

Students do not need to have prior knowledge of Taylor, but as an opening icebreaker I will ask students what they know already know about him!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
As was true of many of America's early presidents, Zachary Taylor was a slaveowner. The course will briefly address Taylor's personal history with slavery, and how it should be viewed when considering Taylor's legacy.
Supply List
In the days prior to the meeting, I will provide a brief handout that contains guidelines for our discussion on our Classroom page, along with a list of a handful of questions and topics I plan for us to discuss.

I will also share a graphic organizer that students can choose to fill out during the lesson. In addition to students being able to practice taking notes, the organizer can be saved so students can further explore Taylor on their own.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I currently teach a full-year US history course at a public high school, and have taught lessons on early American history, slavery, presidents' relationship with slavery for almost ten years. I always stress with my students the importance of practicing historical empathy. In particular, it is essential to learn about the dark moments that are found throughout history and understand why they happened. By doing this we are all put in a better position to address current societal issues.
