Social interactions and making new friends are major challenges for many children with ADHD. Having quality friendships is extremely important to the mental health of children yet a major percentage of ADHD children are found to have no or very few reciprocated friendships. This class focuses on developing self-awareness to help learners identify social skills they need to work on, and offers them some tools to start doing so. This class takes a growth mindset approach which centers on self-acceptance and a commitment towards becoming your best self. In this class: Students will learn about the most common behaviours or factors that are found to contribute to unsuccessful social interactions for children with ADHD. We will explore factors such as; impulse control, interrupting, emotion regulation and physical behaviours. They will reflect on their own experiences in social interactions and discuss which parts of social interactions they find the most challenging. They will learn about various types of social interactions such as interactions with friends and family and we will discuss different difficulties each interaction poses. During class: Learners will be asked to answer some questions to describe their social interactions to help them reflect on their own social skills. We will then discuss different tools and strategies that they can use to improve their social interactions with peers. - For example; interruption training and social interaction reflection - Students will learn about using a social interaction journal and will be provided with a template to use following the class to help them apply the strategies we will learn in class. Having grown up with ADHD myself I know how difficult social interactions and being self-aware can be at times. Through learning about myself I have been able to develop better friendships and learned to be more comfortable in social settings and I hope that this class is able to help your learners on their journey. I am a very enthusiastic and supportive teacher who is always excited to hear about what my learners have to share.
