Class Experience

In this class, students will look at Google Slides, and my globe, to examine where continents are on the Earth. We will discuss the size of continents and their positions relative to the Equator and Prime Meridian. We will also discuss the oceans that border the continents. Once the students feel confident about where the continents and oceans are located, students will draw the 5 major oceans and 7 continents on their balloon globe! Your student will need a balloon and marker (preferably permanent) for this class! If you have a different object your student would like to draw on in place of a balloon, feel free to supplement!

The picture for this class is an example of student work! While we will be drawing our continents on the balloon globe, this class is not a drawing class, and I am not an artist. The focus of this class is geography, and all artistic levels are encouraged to join!

Parental Guidance
It can be helpful for an adult to blow up the balloon before class. Be careful not to overinflate, as that makes the balloon more likely to pop when drawn on. Additionally, fine tip markers or markers with a sharp "point" are not recommended as they can also lead to popping! The sound of a popping balloon can be upsetting to some students. Please keep this in mind as we cannot control if a student's balloon will pop.
Supply List
A balloon is necessary for this class. (A styrofoam ball or blank beach ball could be used as a supplement)
A permanent marker is necessary for this class. (Regular markers will work, but tend to smear. Permanent markers are best.)

*Note-dark color balloons (red/green/black) are not conducive to this activity. Lighter colored balloons will show student writing better! Dark color markers without a sharp tip/point are encouraged.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
