This is a one-time interactive lecture designed for budding entrepreneurs who want to change the world with their earth-shattering idea by starting their own company and make millions of dollars. Gary Friedman is a NASA veteran with many patents and inventions. He left NASA to try to commercialize his ideas. In doing so, he learned that the old adage "If you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door" was completely untrue. The lecture will start with a quiz,...
1) The myths you were taught at a young age about "Building a better mousetrap" are untrue. 2) There is no correlation between good products and products that sell. 3) Don't try to do it all yourself. Start with investors. You will live longer. 4) Patents don't protect you as much as you might think. 5) If you are successful, larger companies will swoop in with an inferior product and out-market you. You've already lost. 6) Most successful entrepreneurs fail several times before achieving success.
No homework will be assigned; however they are strongly encouraged to start their own companies and give it a go, using my advice to avoid common pitfalls.
No formal assessment will be offered.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
