US Grade 4 - 7
Students will learn about the ten largest moons in our Solar System. Topics that will be covered include different sizes of the moons, the time of their discoveries, how they got their names as well as fun facts about each of them. The class will have a warmup, followed by a lecture about the ten largest moons in our Solar System, and a student activity where students can find out more about these moons as well as a moon of their choice. Students are encouraged to ask questions and discuss these moons during the class. I will give a lecture on Google Slides of the top 10 largest moons in the Solar System. Participation in the form of asking questions, comments, and discussion is welcome during the class. Students will be able to interact with me and the rest of the class during the warmup, the lecture and the student activity. All that is required is a desire to learn.
Learning Goals
Students will learn basic details about the ten largest moons in the Solar System.
Students will learn 3 to 4 new facts about a moon of their choice.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
We will briefly discuss the different Greek and Roman mythological figures that the moons are named after. Some of them are tragic figures and while I will be discussing them briefly and keeping it PG, it might be disturbing to students. Therefore, discretion is advised.
Students will use external websites, namely NASA Solar System Exploration, Space Facts, and Planets for Kids, to guide their discoveries on moons. Students will be reading about moons on these sites. Students do not need to have an account for these websites.
Supply List
Students should bring paper and a pen or pencil for taking notes.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
We will refer to information from NASA on several occasions during the class.
