3 live meetings
1 hrs 30 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
The student will gain phonological knowledge, phonemic awareness, and confidence needed to read and write successfully.
Assessment
I will start tutoring by giving an informal assessment or screening to determine where I need to start instruction. Do they know the letters and sounds? High-frequency words? Simple decodable text? More complex text? I just need to know where they are.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 11
I'm Ms. Brenda, a highly qualified Reading Interventionist. I am a Certified Dyslexia Tutor and have taught Reading Interventions for 28 years. I will do a brief discovery screening with your child to obtain the needed information for well-informed instruction. Depending on age and grade, this may include alphabet recognition, sound recognition, decoding skills, phonological awareness, high-frequency word recognition, and penmanship. I am trained in Barton Reading and Spelling plus multi-sensory instruction. I will systematically move your child along a continuum of phonics instruction to gain the skills needed for success. Your child's session will include a study of the alphabetic code and how it is applied in phonemic awareness. We will look at phonological awareness through rhyming, segmenting words, manipulating letters, and sentence construction. Part of the learning to read process includes writing so therefore we will have writing that will accompany some sessions. During our times together we will work on letter/sound relationships, reading, spelling, and writing. The sessions will be interactive with letter-tiles and word-tiles and will contain videos, games, slides, high-frequency word instruction, decodable reading, and more. I believe in meeting the student where they are and following the student as I guide them to success. If you don't see a time listed that is convenient for your schedule please contact me for other available times.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a Certified Dyslexia Therapist and Reading Interventionist. I have worked with struggling readers for 29 years. I believe every child can learn, each child learns differently so you must find the right teacher and the key to open the door. Even at a young age, I knew I wanted to teach reading.
I have a masters degree in education, am a certified Reading Recovery Specialist, a certified Literacy Coach, and a certified Dyslexia Therapist. I use the multi-sensory methodology of teaching reading as well as other research-based methods of instruction, all of which are set up to help the struggling reader. I will choose the tools that best fits your child.
In my introductory video you met my fur baby. Since March 2020 I've spent a lot of time tutoring virtually, reading, knitting and crocheting with him napping on my lap.
