All humans want to be happy, and you hold the key to your happiness in your own hands. Developing an “attitude of gratitude” is one of the simplest ways to enhance your happiness and joy with life. Gratitude is one of the most powerful ways of saying what’s in your heart with just two words, “Thank You.” According to literature, gratitude opens the door to more and better relationships, improves physical health, improves psychological health, enhances empathy, reduces aggression, improves self-esteem, increases mental strength, and grateful people sleep better. One way to create an attitude of gratitude is to find a way to say ‘thank you’ for your day and for all that you have. Journaling is a soothing, honest, and personal way to do this. Turning this act of journal writing into a daily habit can have an amazingly positive affect on your life. First Five Minutes: Welcome The class will begin with a motivational welcome. A short inspirational video will be played to set the mood and character of the class. The concept of gratitude will be discussed and writing strategies provided. 20 Minutes: Journal Writing Journal writing prompts will be provided (e.g. what are at least three good things that happened that day or the day prior (depending on class meeting time); what is one thing that didn’t go as planned and what lesson was learned from that to make it better next time; what are at least three things that the learner is grateful for on this day; and the student's own free writing.) Last Five Minutes: Closing the Loop The last five minutes of class will be used for open discussion and reflection about the writing process, and for general bonding with classmates so students go away with a sense of fullness and positivity.
