Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner Level
Students will be taught test taking strategies they can use before (Part 1), during (Part 2), and after a test (Part 3). Each class session will be approximately 1 hour long. The class will consist of both lecture and discussion. I prefer to introduce smaller amounts of information and then invite learners to ask questions before moving on to the next topic. I try to encourage each student to participate in discussions. Please see below for the specific content related to each course session.

During Part 1 we will discuss 4 topics:

1. The importance and benefits of using test taking strategies [e.g., Performance, Confidence, Time management]

2. Common test question components and terms [e.g., Item, Stem, Key, and Distractors]

3. The importance of understanding the structure of a test [e.g., Length, Item types, Content emphasis, Learning objectives]

4. Research based strategies for preparing for a test [e.g., Study habits, Productive learning spaces, Practice]

During Part 2 we will discuss 6 topics:

1. Effectively using your time during the test.
2. Carefully reading the test and item directions.
3. Carefully navigating the test (e.g., computer based test)
4. Relaxing and concentrating before and during the test.
5. Strategies for ruling out distractors (i.e., incorrect answers).
6. Strategies for identifying cues for the key (i.e., correct answer).

During Part 3 we will discuss 3 topics:

1. The importance of post test reflection and improvement [e.g., Identify areas of strength and growth]

 2. Critically evaluating your overall test performance [e.g., Study habits, Use of test taking strategies, and Test results]

3. Developing and implementing the post test learning plan goals [e.g., Focus your time, Reflect on growth areas, Establish measurable goals, Practice accountability, Establish post test group]
