Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Beginner Level
This class will teach your student how to identify Main/Central Idea and supporting details. Summarizing is also a covered strategy that is taught within the lessons of this class as well. These are both skills found to be tested on many state exams. This class is structured in an model and practice modality. The teacher will model how to identify the Main/central idea within the text and one relevant detail. The student will then practice finding more relevant details independently for the lesson. The following lesson will use the same text, graphic organizer and a writing template to model how to write a 5-7 sentence paragraph that summarizes the text. My teaching style is supportive allowing the student the confidence needed to complete the task independently.
As a self paced class, I will have a video for each lesson modeling and teaching the lesson in depth. The videos will be 15-20 minutes in length. I will answer any questions by Friday evening. However, you can always send me a message if you have any questions throughout the lesson.
Independent assignments are about 30 minutes to 1 hour during the lesson to include graphic organizers, task cards to "scoot" the room activity at home, comprehension sheet or task cards as well and themed paper to write summary on independently.
I do not grade any of the independent activities but do provide answer keys for the parent to review with their student.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
This is my 4th year as a 4th grade teacher in Florida. We test on these benchmarks and I use these exact strategies in my own brick and mortar classroom. I have seen these strategies help my students build confidence by repeated practice. I have seen their test scores increase and they become better readers by the end of the school year.
