Class Experience

We will practice signing into the class, running through a lesson, and troubleshooting issues we may find. We will be designing a two-word optical illusion. Students should choose two words with the same amount of letters such as SUPER GIRLS, MAKER DANNY, and BESTEST FRIENDS. Like always, we will be going over the settings for printing. When we are done designing our models, we will go through the process of turning them into a file to be printed on a 3D printer. Any time left over will go into free design and answering any questions students might have.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Tinkercad is online Computer Aided Design program that is easier to pick up by younger students. With all CAD programs, a mouse is required. Using the trackpad to perform basic functions takes 10 times longer than with a mouse. The teacher will create accounts for the students. Guardians are encouraged to create free personal accounts separate from the class at the end of the program for the students. The teacher will not continue to maintain accounts after the program has ended since we can't continue to monitor their usage. Ultimaker Cura is a "slicing" program that turns 3D objects into instructions for the 3D printers. It is free to download and use on Windows and Mac. Please make sure you can download and install this program before purchasing the class. Thingiverse is an online repository for digital objects.
Supply List
Students will need access to a computer and a mouse. The mouse is mandatory since trackpads are just too difficult to use with design programs.

Learners might find it helpful to work with two screens or use a separate device to run Zoom on since we will be working on the computer. If using multiple devices, you may need to run zoom on both so students can share their screen if there are any questions.

Students will benefit from having the keyboard shortcuts (listed in the materials) printed to reference while designing.

For the custom tea light holder, please purchase an LED tea light to prevent fires. Plastic is flammable.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Currently, I teach technology, coding, and design to elementary and middle school students during and after school. Before that, I taught adults how to perform their duties at an educational assessment and instruction company. After demonstrating my 3D printing and design hobby to my children's science class, the teacher and principle agreed that I needed to teach a class at the school and I'm so glad they convinced me! It's a privilege to see what these students come up with as they gain the skills to use the tools at their disposal.

My teaching style is project oriented. I tend to learn best by doing, so that's how I design my lessons. First, I show all the steps in a project and then we go through them together as a class. After that, the students will add their creative flourishes. The projects are designed to highlight the actions that will allow students to really get a feel for the tools.

My favorite thing I’ve printed so far is a collapsible banana.
