Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) is one of the world's most famous graphic artists. He is well-known for his mathematically-inspired wood engravings, lithographs and sketches. In this class, students will be reviewing the works of Escher, as well as learning about abstract art and how mathematical concepts can be implemented. Together we will create our own tessellations and color them in to make a pattern. In addition to making their own shapes, students will also be provided with a fun, optional template they can cut out and color for future projects! To make our pattern, students can use a ruler to make a paper square that they will alter into a shape that can be repeated as a tessellation. I will assist them with making a square if needed, but you can prepare a square in advance, or use a sheet of origami paper to make this step easier. In my art classes I encourage students to express themselves and find their own art style. I will be demonstrating how to create our own shapes, but your child will be free to choose their own colors and patterns. This class is designed to be fun and upbeat, with extra positive energy and encouragement!
