Students will learn that a tessellation is an interlocking, repeated pattern, or type of mosaic. Several completed tessellations will be viewed and discussed, including the art of M. C. Escher. Students will also view and discuss pictures of tessellations in nature. Using a provided polygon page, students will make a sturdy (card stock, index card, file folder, poster/tag board, etc.) polygon to alter. Students will be guided through transformation of their chosen polygon to create a sliding tessellation template. Though the names and some of the elements of the provided polygons will be discussed, no prior knowledge is necessary. Students will view one another's templates and brainstorm possible color/illustration creation options. Each student will develop his/her design choice on a separate piece of paper. Using a 12"x18" sheet of construction paper or a larger piece of poster/tag board, students will tessellate their template to fill the page. Color and/or illustrations will be added once the tessellation outlines have been completed. Most students will not complete their artwork prior to the end of class. Outside class student time will vary depending upon the detail of individual student designs. Should students (and parents) wish, a follow up group meeting may be scheduled to share final projects. There will be no formal evaluation, just an opportunity to share these really cool masterpieces.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Missouri Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Most kids love art. And, why wouldn't they?! They get to be creative; it's relatively non-judgmental; and it's NOT "school work." This class is similar to getting kids to eat broccoli. (Add cheese sauce...) Students will be creating their own work of art based on their ideas, their time frame and their interests (cheese sauce). There will, however, be a sprinkling of geometric terms: polygons, quadrilaterals, squares, rectangles, parallelograms, rhombuses, hexagons, symmetry, etc. - aka the broccoli. Being the math nerd that I am, my favorite aspect of exposing students to tessellations (aside from their excitement regarding their creations) is development of a math-based, artistic eye. This involves the "Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon" or "frequency illusion." That's when you have a heightened awareness of a particular item, word, event, etc. occurring over and over again in your daily life. In this case, noticing math shapes and/or repeated patterns or tessellations in all sorts of places. Yay for math (masquerading as art)!
