Terrific Trilobites - Explore The Prehistoric World
Class experience
Trilobites are fascinating prehistoric creatures that lived in the ancient oceans! Although they died out before the dinosaurs evolved, their fossils have been found all over the world. In this class, we'll look at specimens of these unusual creatures, label and color a diagram, and make a terrific trilobite to keep and display. Our exploration will begin at the American Museum of Natural History, which has a huge collection of trilobites of different sizes and shapes. We'll use these...
Students will learn that creatures evolved and went extinct for millions of years before the time of the dinosaurs. Students will identify the key features of trilobites, such as their three lobes, exoskeleton, and eyes. Students will compare the Earth's land and water formations long ago to Earth's appearance today. Students will explain how mass extinction events can cause even well-adapted species to go extinct.
As a museum educator, I developed a class based on this content for the American Museum of Natural History, and it is always a crowd favorite! Many students who love prehistoric times haven't heard of trilobites before, or think that prehistoric times started with the dinosaurs, and I love helping them to get a broader perspective and appreciation for Earth's history!
Students will get a trilobite printout to use during class. Students will need to have ready: -pencil or erasable pen for labeling -coloring supplies, such as colored pencils or crayons -a flat work surface
