Students will learn about the circumstances that lead to one of the most embarrassing military incidents during the British occupation of Afghanistan, mainly at the hands of George Keith Elphinstone The topics taught will be as follows: 1)The early life of William George Keith Elphinstone 2) The fall of the Durrani Empire and the rise of the Emirate of Afghanistan 3)The Great game between the British Empire and the Russian Empire in Afghanistan 4)The Anglo-Afghan War 5) Elphinstone's posting in Kabul and the problem with British military nepotism 6)Elphinstone's negligence in Kabul 7) The Afghans dominate Kabul 8)The envoys to the Afghans 9)The retreat from Kabul and the massacre of the British forces 10) The Legacy of Elphinstone 11) British and Afghan reaction to the massacre My class will be structured along a timeline events leading to the military defeat. I will teach using a mixture of images and discussion, along with military maps. My teaching style can be described as interactive. Learners will get to interact with me primarily through slides and discussion. I would like to engage the students to also think of better alternatives to how this battle could have been handled better as a thought exercise.

Parental Guidance
This topic involves a famous military defeat, so there will be talk of dead soldiers in this class. This class will also feature a time period covering the subject of colonialism in Afghanistan and the British treatment of the local Afghans. There will be talk about the oppression and later banditry that would occur around this region and time, and the massacre itself will talk about the brutality of what happened to the British forces.
