For ten weeks, we will read a variety of highly acclaimed books across genres. I have chosen these books to get tweens excited and engaged with the writing, making them want to share their thoughts with others. Before the first meeting, please have your student read Swan Lake. Swan Lake is a graphic novel and a quick read making it a good choice for those signing up close to the first meeting. The books we will be discussing are: Week 1 - The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton Week 2 - The Kane Chronicles, Book One: The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan Week 3 - As Brave as You by Jason Reynolds Week 4 - The Blackthorn Key by Kevin Sands Week 5 - The Girl in White by Lindsay Currie Week 6 - The Rithmatist Brandon Sanderson Week 7 - Worser by Jennifer Ziegler Week 8 - The Fort by Gordon Korman Week 9 - The Ghost of Midnight Lake by Lucy Strange Week 10 - Two Degrees by Alan Gratz Every week, I will lead a round-table discussion for each book we read in terms of structure. We will discuss topics ranging from the author's intent to character and plot development. Then we will all share our opinions as we analyze the works. By facilitating the discussion, I will model to the students how to clearly express their thoughts and debate and discuss topics with their peers. Every student in the class will have an opportunity to share their opinion. Please look up the books before enrolling your student to make sure the choices will be a good match for your student and your family. These books are upper middle-grade novels and may not be appropriate for all families.
Learning Goals
Book clubs in middle school are a great way to teach students to form and share opinions with others which is an important skill to have as they get older. I run all book clubs so every student is able to answer questions that I pose and participate in the lively discussion. I am also aware that some students prefer to participate through chat than on a microphone. This is completely acceptable. My goal for the students is to get them to share their thoughts in whatever way they feel comfortable doing that.

Parental Guidance
Please look up the books prior to enrolling your student to make sure the choices will be a good match for your student and your family. Some of our books deal with big issues such as death of a parent, mental health crises, racism, and bullying. All books are firmly middle grade reads and deal with everything in an appropriate way.

I am passionate about books and have been running book clubs for homeschoolers for over ten years. I believe that book clubs are a great way to prepare for high school level analysis and also teach students how to articulate their thoughts about what they have read. And I love graphic novels and hopefully, by the end of this course, your student will too!
