Telling Time Bootcamp: Everything You Need to Know!
What's included
5 live meetings
3 hrs 20 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
This multi-day course will meet 5x over the course of 1 week. Throughout the course learners will build their time identification skills to the exact minute, and learn to add and subtract time on a number line. Students do not need any prior experience with telling time. The structure is "I do. We do. You do." Meaning that I will instruct students in the day's new topic and then show them step-by-step how to solve a few example problems. As we go through the example problems I will ask students more and more for their input on how to solve a problem. Then, students will participate in answering multiple choice or word problems and explain to the class how they solved their problems either by telling or showing us their math-solving process. I will be there every step of the way as students build their confidence. I always tell students, "The worst thing that can happen when explaining your thinking is that you've made a mistake and can learn from it! That is why we are all here!" Class Schedule: Day 1: How to Tell Time - Learn the name of the clock hands and how they move - Learn how to count by 5s to identify the minutes on a clock (nearest 5 minutes) - Practice identifying the time on analog clocks - Practice matching/writing the digital time after identifying the time on analog clocks Day 2: Telling Time to the Minute - Learn how to identify the exact minute on the clock (count by 5s, then by 1s) - Practice identifying time to the nearest minute Day 3: Elapsed Time Within the Hour - Learn what elapsed time is - Learn how to use a number line to solve elapsed time problems - Practice adding time on a number line to figure out when an activity will be over i.e. your piano lesson starts at 4:15 and lasts 30 minutes. What time is your piano lesson over? Day 4: Elapsed Time Across Multiple Hours - Continued practice with utilizing the number line to add time and solve elapsed time problems Day 5: Subtracting Time on a Number Line - Learn how to solve elapsed time problems using the end time and the length of the activity on a number line i.e. You watched a movie that was 1 hour and 35 minutes long. You finished the movie at 4:05. What time did you start watching the movie?
Learning Goals
Common Core Standards that will be taught throughout this course:
2nd Grade
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.7
Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.
3rd Grade
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.MD.A.1
Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and
subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
Other Details
Supply List
Students should come prepared with plenty of paper and a pencil to practice writing digital time using analog clocks as well as solving elapsed time problems on a number line.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Oklahoma Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello! My name is Eva Zotkin. I am a licensed elementary teacher providing interactive, math based escape rooms and 1:1 elementary math tutoring. I received my degree in elementary education, linguistics and ESL in 2015 and have been teaching in the classroom ever since! I am passionate about providing engaging learning opportunities that inspire students to reach their goals and explore new interests. When is comes to math, I believe there is no such thing as "one strategy fits all." Therefore I introduce students to multiple ways of approaching a problem so that they can decide what works best for them. Escape rooms are one of my favorite ways to engage my mind in something fun and I love getting to see the wheels turn in learners' minds as they work to solve puzzles. I believe that learning should always take place in a low stakes environment where every learner feels safe to make mistakes and learn from others. I have had many opportunities to make mistakes and grow from them as I have pursued my degrees and developed my skills in non-academic settings such as tennis, field hockey and violin. I cannot wait to meet your learner and help them grow! If you see a class and the time offered doesn't fit your schedule, please reach out and request a time! I will do my best to accommodate the request!
