Class Experience

When our children develop passions, we want to encourage them, even when (let's be honest) we sometimes get a little bit tired of hearing about the same game for hours on end. In Tell Me All About Roblox, your kids will spend an hour telling me about their favorite mods, skins, games, and roleplays. I will listen and ask questions designed to elicit more detailed descriptions and explanations of game mechanics. Discussion between students about these topics is highly encouraged! We will strive towards conversations that are respectful and involve active listening.

The focus of this class is developing conversation skills with peers and adults, as well as learning to describe things with clarity and specificity so that someone with less familiarity with a subject can learn something new. I will offer positive feedback about a topic that students feel strongly about and give them an opportunity to feel heard and see their opinions and knowledge are valued. Learners will need their own Roblox account if they wish to play along.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Roblox is a gaming platform that attracts players of all ages and brings with it the risks of online space. During class time, I monitor students' interactions with other players, but parents should also routinely check their students' Roblox account activity to ensure their students are playing in a safe manner. I routinely remind students of basic rules of online safety, such as not giving out personal contact information to people online, but I only have your student for one hour a week. If you would like more information on cybersafety on Roblox, please let me know! We will also regularly review the concepts of "no money for nothing," and "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is" as they apply to online interactions. I will also reinforce the necessity of parents checking in on players' accounts, and having open communication with parents in the event of unwelcome messaging. Again, these are concepts to reinforce with your students, as I only see them one hour per week. Please note that I will never communicate with students directly through the Roblox platform, in class or out. I use Outschool and Zoom for all teacher-student communications. I will not respond to messages students send me on Roblox. I use Roblox solely for educational purposes, so while your students may be excited to see I am online and in a game, please remind them that I am teaching other classes during this time, and that those students require my full attention during class, just as your student receives my full attention during their class.
