Tell Me a Story: Literature for Teens
Class experience
US Grade 8 - 11
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Together the teacher and learners will explore three different literary forms: Short Stories, Narrative Poetry, and Essays. Literature can seem out of reach, out of touch, and out-right boring. But I have found that learners can love literature when they are supported with modeling and aid in analysis, lots of time for discovery and discussion, and a teacher who finds it all fascinating. Students will be introduced to, discuss, and enjoy poets, essayists, and short story writers.

Parents are the best judge of their learners' sensitivities and maturity. Some of the pieces we will read are intense, and a few bring up sensitive issues. There is the suggestion of sexual assault and or drug abuse in "Goblin Market" though it is not explicit. Suicide is an issue we will discuss in terms of Woolf's poem. The question of evil and the role of religion in society is dealt with in several pieces including, "Rime of the Ancient Mariner," "Young Goodman Brown," "An Old Man with Enormous Wings" and "The Possibility of Evil." Furthermore, modern and historical America, international relations and immigration are dealt with by both Tom Wolfe and Amy Tan. I would be happy to provide links for parents to preview any of the literature they are concerned about, and I welcome conversation about any of the literature choices here. Please feel free to reach out.
