Teen Resilience

The “Teen Resilience” class will teach you how to turn everyday life challenges into steppingstones toward success in achieving your life goals and dreams.

Class experience

•	Students will develop an appreciation of their own personal value. 
o	Learn how to celebrate successes. 
o	Utilize disappointments in constructive ways that promote continued growth. 
o	Estimate their monetary worth over the average life span in the U. S.
•	Students will identify constructive ways for managing bullying and other attacks on their personhood so that they rise above the challenges.  
•	Students will identify resources in their environment that will provide support in the achievement of their goals. 
Dr. Marcia Davis, the course instructor, is a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with a Doctoral Degree in Nursing Practice.  She worked with children birth to 21 years in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and school settings.  She also taught nursing students formally in university settings including Loma Linda University and Azusa Pacific University, both in Southern California.  Marcia’s passion for the plight of teenagers led to the development of a translational research project that involved an intergenerational approach to building teen resilience. 
Homework Offered
Students should expect to spend 1-2 hours per week on coursework outside of class. Homework assignments are tailored to encourage outside connections with older adults of choice for gaining their perspectives and their life stories as they relate to the resilience concepts taught.

Assessments Offered
Students will be informally and formally assessed in this course. Informal assessments will include a mixture of class discussions on case scenarios, sharing personal or older adult life stories related to the resilience concepts taught in class, and participation in interactive quizzes. Formal assessments will include responses to questions on a resilience evaluation tool that will be administered at the beginning and at the end of the course. Student completion of a personal vision board will also be a part of the formal assessment.
Grades Offered
Students will need to have access to a Google account and a Canva.com account.  For the development of their vision board, students will need the following supplies:
•	Poster board, at least 16 X 24 inches
•	Portrait of themselves
•	Lettering and/or markers of various colors
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Parents will be encouraged to support student attendance to all sessions.  Parents will also be encouraged to support student effort to connect with a trusted older adult, preferably 65 years of age or older, for obtaining life stories related to resilience concepts that will be taught in the course. These stories will be shared in class.
There are no required books, articles or other sources that students need to obtain for this course.
