US Grade 8 - 10
In this course, we will explore the basics of poetry as an introduction for high school learners beginning their poetry journeys. Each class will have a quick review of the previous class and then dive into new and exciting concepts of poetry We will look at many different poems and analyze them to determine their types, structures, and central methods. Our learning begins by learning what a poem is and the different poems with examples (ode, sonnet, limerick, list, and free verse). We will explore rhyme and rhythm, then learn about literary devices by reading fun poems by Kenn Nisbet (used with permission). Next, we will move on to deeper analysis and find central themes. We will compare poems with Venn Diagrams and write summaries of our findings. Finally, we will practice writing different poems such as acrostics, haikus, and limericks. Learners need no prior knowledge of poetry to participate in the class. We will use Google Slides, which will be screenshared and accessed by the students at times. No login will be required.
