*This class has Prerequisites! Please see Video!* This handstand class is an introduction to Hand Balancing, a circus discipline that involves balancing in a handstand and making different shapes with the legs and body. Students signing up for the course are expected to already be able to kick-up to a vertical, straight-body handstand and fall out of it safely. They are also expected to be able to hold a handstand against the wall for 30sec. In each class, students will work on different drills to learn how to balance, free standing, on their hands. They will learn how to position their hands and use their fingers to control their balance. We will work on balancing in different body positions and making shapes with our legs. Hand Balancing is an intense physical activity and take lots of practice to master which is why we'll be repeating similar drills each week. Different challenges will be added based on the personal needs of the students in class that week. Each class we will be doing a thorough warm up as well as strength and flexibility training as a part of class. Although we'll work hard, we'll also have some fun! There will be games, contests, and chances to socialize while we stretch!

*For Safety Reasons, This Class Has Prerequisites!* Please make sure your student can confidently do the skills shown in the class video. Students who do not meet the prerequisites will not be allowed to take class! If you aren't sure if you qualify, feel free to message me.
While safety is my number one priority, handstands are slightly more dangerous than sitting in a chair and sometimes injuries happen. The most common injuries involve banging shins or feet on a coffee table. Please make sure you have ample space, free of sharp corners or furniture, to kick, flail and fall. Don't forget to check overhead for low hanging lights or pictures. Parents should be nearby during class in case of injury. Never practice alone! Warm up and cool down will be done during class. Students should have a water bottle nearby. Please read the Supply List to make sure you have everything they need for class! Note the need for a clear wall space!
Supply List
- Floor Workout Space: Enough room on the floor and surrounding space to kick, flail, fall, and do snow angels. - Wall Workout Space: An empty wall with enough space vertically for the student to put their arms overhead while standing against it and enough space horizontally for the student to lay down sideways, parallel to the wall. We will spend at least half our class using the wall so this is especially important! - Appropriate Clothing: Loose enough to have full range of motion but tight enough so I can see their form. Remember we are going upside down so no skirts or loose shorts, and shirts must be either tight or able to tuck in. Leggings or sweatpants with a shirt are fine. Long hair must be tied back! Strongly Recommended (but not required) - Hard Surface: If you have tile or wood floor against your Wall, you're set. If you have carpet, a small piece of plywood will be helpful AND - Soft Surface: If you have carpet in the work out area, you're set. If you have a hard floor, a thick yoga mat will do the trick. Yes, You'll want both a hard and soft surface option. We'll be using the hard surface for handstands and the soft surface for stretching and drills. - Water Bottle

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching youth (and the young at heart) to do handstands for over 10 years. I started teaching circus at the School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts in Seattle, Washington where I was trained to teach all different circus disciplines using progressions with the intention of learning safely and building confidence through small successes. As a professional circus performer, my main discipline is Hand to Hand. This discipline involves doing handstands on top of other people. Which means I spend a lot of time practicing my handstands!
