This class is taught in English.
Students will gain a humbling and inspiring birds-eye view of the role of artistic expression in humans over time. They will see how humanity has always struggled existentially and that art has been a practice for communicating the unsayable. Students will strengthen skills around developing inspiration from both the mundane and miraculous, and skills for overcoming creative blocks.
Georgia has had the privilege of teaching thousands children and teens music over the past decade as a private instructor, community music teacher, published author, and teaching artist. She is an active working musician in Nashville, has recorded three full-length albums, and makes visual art. She graduated from Berklee College of Music with honors in 2014, with a BA in songwriting, and is currently pursuing a Masters in Music Therapy at Duquesne University to better inform the mental-health supporting elements of the You Be You curriculum.
Homework Offered
Each week, students will: 1) Read 40-70 pages of a selected book 2) Complete short reflection prompts 3) Apply something from the reading to their own artistic practice.2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Written reports for school credit available upon request. The true assessment however will be internal, as students learn to access their inner artistic worlds with courage, humor, and dedication.Grades Offered
A copy of each of the listed books (barring The Mysticism of Sound and Silence by Hazrat Inayat Khan, and Rainbow in the Cloud by Angelou, as we will read selected parts only. A dedicated artist journal. Pens and other art supplies that make you happy.
This class references readings from diverse cultures, eras (1200's to present!), and people of different faiths. Please note that any expression of faiths (Christianity, Sufism) that appear in any readings are taught for secular purposes only, and reflect the authenticity, world-view, and context of the writers we study.
