With 20 years of experience with middle and high schoolers, I must admit they are my favorite ages. It started when I was in graduate school in the late 1990s. I was part of the education reform teach of the first charter school in New Orleans. Naturally, we were also the research and development location where I was the program manager of the enrichment classes for the middle and high school. Today, that project is called New Orleans Outreach and is very successful. At Outreach, I single handedly organized, developed and maintained over 20 class electives with nearly 100 volunteers. When needed, I had to fill in for volunteers at my local site which gave me the opportunity to teach debate, public speaking, communication and culture classes (to name a few). These classes were very popular among my students. In fact, they liked them so much they asked me to dedicate myself as the sole teacher after my first year. After my time in New Orleans, I headed to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania where I became the associate director of the Pennsylvania School Reform Network, a project of the Education Law Center. I advocated for high school students and also taught them how to be heard in a public forum. I was on the board of local public high school newspapers to the university panel of political discussions regarding education public policy of Pennsylvania. My position was to work with young adults to help give them a voice and guide them to be heard for the moment they turned 18 years of age. I look forward to meeting and teaching your children to share these gifts with them.
