Fill-in-the-blank sentence prompts are a fantastic way for beginning writers to gain practice in making sentences. - Having taught writing to Outschool learners since April 2020, I have seen how learners approach sentence writing in different ways. I have designed this class to reflect the various strategies learners use to construct sentences. - Each class will focus on different kinds of parts of speech. For example, one week we may fill in the blanks for verbs in past tense, and another week we may fill in the blanks for place nouns. - An introduction to the particular part of speech for the week will be included on the first slide. - The sentences, with the blank spaces included, will be presented on the next slide slide. Students will copy down as many sentences as they can, in the time allotted, including the word they choose to fill in the blank in the sentence. - For example, if the sentence was: "My favorite breakfast food is _______" and your learner wanted to list waffles, they would write down on their paper, "My favorite breakfast food is waffles." - In the first four weeks, we will focus on the following parts of speech for our fill-in-the-blanks: - Week of February 27th: Playing Outside-Adjectives - Week of March 6th: Past Tense Verbs - Week of March 13th: Place Nouns - Week of March 20th: Time Adverbs - Learners are welcome to ask any questions about ideas for words, spelling, etc. during the class time. At the end of the class, learners will get to share what they have written. My approach to teaching with fill-in-the-blanks is to provide a structure to support learners in writing while giving them the confidence to write sentences independently. I look forward to having your learner in class!
