US Grade 6 - 7
A rich vocabulary is a passport to clear and engaging writing. Many of us encounter a certain challenge when we write: we may use the same word or phrases repeatedly! Expanding our vocabulary helps to give us strength as writers that make our writing more expressive. This class is structured as a weekly workshop for us to learn about and "play" with words! Each week, the words will fall under a different theme. The first four weeks will have vocabulary falling under the following themes: Week 1: The Great Outdoors Week 2: Creative Traits Week 3: Scientific Skills Week 4: Fast and Quick! After the fourth week, new themes of vocabulary words will be explored at the suggestions of both learners and parents. Through slides, discussion, and written exercises, we will learn each week about the definitions, origins, and usage of ten words. As a vocabulary teacher, I make sure that my learners understand pronunciation of and the contexts in which one would use the words they are learning. The words that learners study in the class are meant to be an initial exposure to these words. Learners are encouraged to keep building on their knowledge of and use of the new words. After each class, a handout with that week's words will be placed on the classroom page. I am open to suggestions from parents about particular words or even themes that may be covered throughout the class sessions. The goal of the class will be that each week, your learner will be able to use their increased knowledge of words to develop their "verbose vocabulary"! I look forward to meeting your learner in class!
