Is your daughter passionate about novels? If so, this might be a great way to introduce her to some of the strongest young adults in literature! Each week, we'll explore one famous heroine and read excerpts from the original novel that showcase her personality and spirit. We'll discuss her main character traits, choices she makes, and how her lessons can be applied to today's world. A breakdown of the discussions will be as follows: WEEK 1 (3/22): Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables WEEK 2 (4/12): Laura Ingalls Wilder from the Little House on the Prairie series WEEK 3 (4/19): Jo March from Little Women WEEK 4 (5/3): Mary Lennox from The Secret Garden WEEK 5 (5/10): Nancy Drew from the Nancy Drew Mysteries WEEK 6 (5/17): Matilda from Matilda WEEK 7 (5/24): Meg Murray from A Wrinkle in Time WEEK 8 (6/7): Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz It is not required that your learner reads the novel ahead of time. This class is more of an introductory lesson into the novels and their heroines. This class is inclusive, which means students of all abilities are welcome. If you student needs any accommodations please let me know and we will work together to ensure that they have the best possible class experience.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Jackie Shaw, and I am so excited to teach your child. I specialize in teaching reading and writing to grades 7-12. I earned my Bachelors of Science from New York University, and my Masters of Arts at Middlebury College. I am also a devoted mom to two children, and will absolutely pull from my experience of teaching them to design fun and engaging lessons for the younger learners!
I have been teaching in public education on Long Island for the last 13 years, and I will now bring what I know from the classroom into my teaching practices with Outschool. I am a teacher who deeply values communication and activity. We learn from talking and from doing, so my classes are really centered around experiential learning. I hope to hear my students' voices more than I hear my own.
My hobbies include cooking, crafting, yoga, traveling, raising animals, and MUSIC! I minored In music performance at NYU and was in a production of Peter Pan in 2019. I will definitely be drawing on my passions as well to create engaging classes for our learners.
I look forward to meeting you!
