What's included

Class Experience

This exciting FLEX semester Tea Time format introduces art through story. Each week, we will read a book by artist and illustrator James Mayhew, then discuss an artist from the book. For the last half of each class, we will focus on a poet and composer.

Each week's assignment sheet will include a videorecording of me reading a Mayhew book, then discussing the artist, looking at more art, learning about a poet, reading a poem, and learning about a composer. The assignment sheet will include a link for the student to listen to the composer's music while sketching a painting by the artist. The assignment sheet will also include discussion questions related to the artist, poet, and composer. I encourage students to post photos of their sketch and poems they write or read (optional) in the classroom each week, as well as answers to discussion questions if they would like to share.

Week 1- Da Vinci, Katie and the Mona Lisa
Week 2- John Constable, Katie and the British Artists
Week 3- Degas, Katie and the Impressionists
Week 4- Monet, Katie and the Waterlily Pond
Week 5- Renoir, Katie's Picture Show
Week 6- Van Gogh, Katie and the Starry Night

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Jennifer enjoys sharing her passion for writing, literature, and the creative arts with students of all ages. As a magazine and commercial writer for national and international corporations and publications, she has relished the great privilege of a career spent stringing words together.

Her background as an elementary school teacher and near decade of homeschooling a brood of four rowdy loves has revealed both the joy and struggle of teaching. She embraces a philosophy of literature based learning with heavy doses of nature thrown in for good measure, aspiring to but always falling quite short of the admirable principles of her mentor, Charlotte Mason.

In her free time, usually eeked out in the wee hours of the night when she should be sleeping, she enjoys devouring library books before her toddler wracks up fines by putting pen and marker to their tempting canvas of pages. She would love to count your children among those she is honored to teach.
