Class Experience

Our sweet Paddington Bear has traveled all the way from Darkest Peru to invite new friends (you!) to jump into make believe tales and help him along the way -- all with a spot of tea and marmalade toast, of course!

A very familiar image of Michael Bond's beloved Paddington is his arrival into London with a cozy hat and a suitcase full of marmalade. While not many travelers fill a case with marmalade, suitcases have been traditionally adorned with stickers and emblems of places the traveler/ luggage has visited! In this course, we are doing the same for Paddington; except his suitcase stickers (he will 'collect' one each week) will depict lessons he has learned.

As with any place new, and being a young bear to boot, students in the class will receive a letter from Paddington each week, asking for help in learning something in his new environment (i.e. how to be a good friend, the importance of telling the truth, etc.) After I read aloud Paddington's letter, students will help brainstorm ideas and share their own experience with Paddington's need for guidance.

Once we have equipped ourselves with some good advice to share with sweet Paddington, helping him grow as a young bear, we will be able to decorate and color in Paddington's 'achievement sticker' for his suitcase! After all, to grow and learn in our everyday journeys is just as impressive as a journey to a new city.

***Each student should bring their own version of 'tea and toast' to class with them for cozy and immersive Paddington-themed fun! For example, a cup of iced tea or chocolate milk, accompanied with toast with jam/ delicious muffin/ granola bar/ etc. would ALL be fantastic versions!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I may be grown up, but my favorite stories are still found in the land of youth literature!

My natural inclination to read anywhere (including upside down in that childhood recliner I mention in my video!) grew to daydreaming about being the characters I so loved reading about and even wondering what they may be like in the real world. Stories and their inhabitants were never flat to me, but rather full of life and complex – just like us, as it turns out!

After receiving my B.A. in English and Psychology, I taught for over a decade, cultivating my joy in literature and writing through teaching the bright, open minds of Pre K – 1st grade students. I became an educator that sought out books to develop rich, cross-curricular lessons and to build oral language and phonics skills. The world of literacy was (and still is!) accessible to all learners: those at grade level, those clamoring for reading challenges and those who built success with the consistency of a one-on-one/ small group learning environment. Each was meaningful, targeted instruction to best suit elementary reading muscles.

Through my literacy-rooted courses, you will find explorations of character development, personal connections, story elements and cause and effect often intertwined with the ‘science’ of writing: parts of speech, grammar, written fluency/ sequencing, oral communication and weaving words into stories that showcase our imaginations and opinions. Our minds and voices are powerful!

PLEASE don't hesitate to reach out with any curiosities you have about my current class offerings and keep an active eye out for upper elementary to middle grade courses.

An engaging nature, dedicated spirit and discussion galore is sure to accompany each class, as I welcome you into my land of literature!
