Class Experience

Welcome to Tap Camp!

For those who have an interest in learning how to Tap Dance, this camp provides an intro for the beginning-adv. beginning dancer. The skills are presented at a more accelerated pace than the intro series of the same name. For this camp, I’ve taken some of the most essential steps and put them together in one skill-building tap drill dance that will serve as a terrific source of independent practice in the future. Extra practice from week to week is highly encouraged.

Featured Tap Steps MAY include:
- Basic Step Terminology: Flap, Shuffle, Dig, Scuff, Stamp, Stomp, etc.
- Crawl
- Shuffle & Flap Ball-Changes
- Waltz Clog
- Shirley Temple
- Cramp Roll
- Maxie Ford
- Chaine Turn
- Paradiddle
- Drawback
- Irish
- Over the Top

Each class begins with a warm-up, introduction of new steps, and a review of those previously taught. These steps are the component of the larger dance drill that serves as the choreography goal of this camp.

There will be a number of simple breakdown videos posted in the classroom for those wanting to review specific steps in between classes. It is recommended that students practice independently in between class sessions to develop dexterity and create muscle memory for the movement combinations. I will give suggestions on what to practice.

Experience:
No prior experience required.

Which camp do I take?
The age for the Junior level of this camp overlaps with the Teen version. If your age falls between 12-14, you may choose either camp. For absolute beginners, I recommend my Teach Me to Tap Camps.

Preparation & Best Practices:
Plan to join the class 5 minutes early. I recommend that you position your camera so that I can clearly view your feet. This helps me to monitor progress and give specific feedback. Have water available, and be sure to dress appropriately for movement. Either sweatpants or leggings would be a good choice for movement. Younger dancers should be supervised when first using tap shows as they can be slippery, depending upon the floor surface.

After this class, students will progress to the next class in the series. Repeating this camp or diving into the Taptastic class series is always a great option because skills, such as these, are developed over time with consistent practice and instructor feedback.

If you don't see a date or time you like, be sure to contact me with your requests. Also, let me know if you are looking for private classes for groups or individuals - private lessons can be a terrific way to accelerate progress!

Learning Goals

The goal of this camp is to provide an introductory foundation for future study in Tap Dance. In terms of physicality, our goals will be to develop ankle dexterity, the ability to shift balance efficiently and know the difference between turned-out and parallel positions. In terms of technique, students will have been exposed to a variety of well-known tap steps and create a tap dance vocabulary. These steps will ideally be perfected over time and beyond the scope of this class. We aim to create musicality by breaking down counts in the music and learning how to speak the rhythm of each step as we dance.
