Talking & Writing with Wordless Books: An oral language & story writing class Wordless Book: The Birthday Party by Megha Vishwanath Wordless books are a wonderful tool to use with students to enhance their reading comprehension, their oral language skills, and their writing skills. Wordless books can help develop vocabulary and language skills in young children. As they talk about the pictures in the books, they learn to look deeply at the pictures and invent simple story plots to accompany the illustrations. Wordless books help readers progress from listening to a story to telling a story. They learn to create storylines, understand sequencing, and develop opal, and eventually written, storytelling skills. Wordless books make great "story starters" because the illustrations suggest a storyline without using words. So, students can use a wordless book as a beginning point for writing a story. Using wordless books as story starters helps develop basic writing skills like sentence structure, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. But beyond the basics, this story starter activity encourages story-writing skills such as plot and character development and story structure. In this class, students will practice their visual literacy skills by "reading" the wordless book with the teacher. This discussion will help them understand the story and increase their reading comprehension of future books. Then, the students will practice retelling the story in their own words. Finally, the students and the teacher will write the story together focusing on foundational writing skills like composing sentences, story structure/sequence, stretching out words, punctuation, rereading before continuing, spacing and more. Student Ability: The books in level A classes are simple and ideal for the early beginning writer. This class addresses Kindergarten and 1st Grade learning goals, and is a great review for 2nd Grade writers. **Each class can be taken individually; the number just refers to a different wordless book.** Class Schedule: 3 minutes: Greeting 10 minutes: Reading and Discussion of the Wordless Book 10 minutes: Writing the Wordless Book 2 minutes: Closing
