Class Experience
The benefits of sharing a story aloud are immeasurable. In this class, we will meet three times a week to read aloud and reflect together on Kate DiCamillo's Newbery-award winning The Tale of Despereaux, a story of "a mouse, a princess, some soup, and a spool of thread." This is one of the most wonderful stories to come out of the last twenty years of children's literature, and I love sharing it with kids. I will read aloud, and will invite students to read aloud as well. Reading aloud is...
Students will grow in... Reading comprehension Reading interest Ability to read critically
The only homework may come about if we are behind in our shared reading due to lively discussion. This may mean a small bit of independent reading, but generally not more than a chapter or two per week.
Each student will need to have a copy of Kate DiCamillo's The Tale of Despereaux at every class meeting. The book can be bought or borrowed and can be paper or electronic. Please note: There is a novelization of the movie that goes under the same name as the original novel. Make sure to get the novel by Kate DiCamillo.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
