Class Experience

In this 8-week course, I will teach spelling strategies in a logical, sequential order. Through clear direct instruction, students will have the opportunity to learn exactly what they need to know in order to become strong spellers.

Each class will start with a review/introduction of spelling strategies. We'll practice how to:
*Pronounce for spelling (emphasizing the unaccented syllables to hear vowel sounds)
*Analyze different parts of words (prefixes, suffixes, root) and learn suffix/prefix rules as well as how to add 2 suffixes to a word
*Divide syllables and learn syllable types/rules
*Identify and spell homophones
*Use scratch paper spelling (trying out potential spellings to see what looks right)
*Identify the base word and break the word into components to help spell longer words
*Use memory tricks (mnemonics to remember the spellings of particularly tricky words)
*Use a dictionary or other reference books and practice alphabetizing

After a review or introduction of spelling strategies, we'll focus on a new phonogram each week.

Week 1: /kt/ spelled CT
Week 2: /shun/ spelled TION
Week 3: words ending in SS
Week 4: /shun/ spelled SION
Week 5: /eks/ and /egz/ spelled EX
Week 6: /uff/ spelled OUGH
Week 7: OR in unaccented syllables
Week 8: 5 ways to spell /er/ ER, UR, IR, OR, EAR

After learning the rules surrounding the new phonogram that week, students will have the opportunity to use a whiteboard and marker or paper and pencil to practice writing words containing that phonogram. After word practice, they'll have the chance to apply several rules as I dictate sentences they write.
