Through the use of educational but learner-friendly articles, this class will focus on the practical application of note-taking using the Key Word Outline note-taking method (similar to the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) style). This note-taking method is similar to the IEW* keyword outlines used for boosting reading comprehension and extracting the main ideas. Learners will take notes alongside their teacher and peers. Following each note taking session, everyone will compare their notes to learn and ensure that the important information was captured. The class will be structured as follows (with room for more discussion as needed): Ten-minute discussion on how to take notes using abbreviations, symbols, and short phrases, what to take notes on, and tips on how to keep up a quick pace A fifteen to twenty-minute educational article reading during which learners and the teacher will take notes Ten-minute discussion and comparison of notes with peers and teacher Five-minute wrap-up and/or discussion as time allows ** There is a quick tips review in class, but we will not focus on how to abbreviate, use Google docs to take notes, slow videos, provide content outlines, etc. Some of this content will naturally arise in the session and be discussed, but the majority will be learned by practical application and examples from peers and instructors. The goal of this class is to practice the style and compare with others to help students be equipped to walk into a live, real-time session and take notes effectively with no preparation beyond a notebook and pen. All articles will be screen shared on the teacher's screen. No links will be clicked by learners, no external sites will be accessed, nor are account logins needed. *IEW= Institute for Excellence in Writing
