Class Experience

This one-time course is an alternative to my week-long course, and I have combined all topics into one class period mini-lessons. This course is designed to help students learn how to be a good note-takers, how to properly research a topic, and steps to avoid plagiarism. The classroom will be very interactive and activity-based. I will provide a mini-lesson framework for each different topic below in one class period.

Learning How to Summarize and Pick Out Major Details - we will use a piece of text to practice choosing relevant details for note-taking

Learning How to Shrink Your Note-taking - students will learn strategies to summarize quickly and "shrink down" their notes to manageable parts

Note-taking Strategies Organization and Color - we will look at how to take note in different ways to maximize retention of information
Using Graphic Organizers as a Note-taker - we will explore different graphic organizers and how to use them for note-taking

Declaring Your Independence From Plagiarism - we will learn strategies to avoid plagiarism and practice putting text and information into our own words

Students will master many different options when it comes to note-taking and research, and get a lot of practice with each skill that is introduced. I will use a quick PowerPoint for each session, a small video clip, and then we will work together to practice the skills.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the strategies and techniques necessary to be a good note-taker, researcher, and to avoid the dangers of plagiarism.
