Take Me out to the Ballpark! A Fun, Mathematical Look at Baseball.
Class experience
This one-day class is a snapshot look at sabermetrics, the use of statistics to evaluate performance in baseball, and look for what statistics correlate with winning. The students will be introduced to bi-variate analysis, the strength of correlations and correlation coefficients. I will be collecting and providing the students with the data that we will be evaluating formatted in a Google sheet. I will teach the students how to create and customize scatter plots from the data, and draw...
The students will be able to define the terms bi-variate, positive and negative correlation, correlation coefficient and sabermetrics. They will learn how to convert data into scatterplots complete with a best fitting line using Google sheets. They will be able to identify if there is a relationship, positive or negative, between the data sets and they will calculate the strength of the relationship.
I am a licensed mathematics teacher with 13 years experience teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Geometry to middle school students. I have exceptional data (local, state and national) that supports excellent students outcomes in my math classes.
The students should have a basic calculator and access to Google Sheets.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
The students will be working off of a Google sheet that I will be providing for each student. I will instruct them how to manipulate the data to create scatterplots and will customize the plots. The students will copy parts of the data that is provided and paste it into the online Pearson Correlation Coefficient Calculator on the Social Science Statistics website (socscistatistics.com).
I will be collecting the data that I provide the students from ESPN.com and Spotrac.com. We will use the Pearson Correlation Coefficient Calculator on the Social Science Statistics website (socscistatistics.com).
