I will use Google Slides to introduce the problem-solving method, using both single-step and multi-step problems as examples. Then I will work with students to solve single and multi-step problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We will focus on understanding and solving each problem using the introduced problem-solving method and will work together collaboratively (I will be using the whiteboard and students will be practicing on their papers). Students will practice a problem-solving strategy to help them solve single-step and multi-step mathematical word problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
I have taught third-grade mathematics in a public school for four years. Last year, I was one of five third grade teachers in my school district to be rated "highly effective" by my state's education agency. I've developed a problem-solving framework that has helped my students solve word problems. Students are often intimidated by word problems and either do not know how to get started or rush through problems without understanding what they require. My problem-solving method helps students avoid these common pitfalls, equipping them with a simple and flexible framework they can use to solve any word problem.
No homework will be assigned.
Please make sure students begin the class with at least two sharpened pencils and at least four blank pieces of paper. I will provide a handout that summarizes the steps in my problem-solving method. The handout will also include some of the examples used during class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There will be no formal assessment. Since the class focuses on developing a problem-solving model, I will encourage students to practice using the model after the class ends. I am happy to answer any questions (from students or parents) concerning how to continue to practice solving word problems.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
