Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Welcome to Sounds and Syllables: Level 1. In this 10 week course learners will hone their reading skills as they practice decoding and reading two syllable closed syllable words that follow the VC/CV and V/CV syllable patterns.

Each lesson in this class follows the I do, We do, You do method of instruction to scaffold student learning so that they are able to begin independently decoding two syllable closed syllable words. Lessons will follow the same general format from week to week but the content will be adjusted as we move through learning to decode four different types of two syllable closed syllable words (compound words, words with the same middle consonant, words with two different middle consonants, and words with blends). Instruction is interactive and the lessons are designed to meet learners with a variety of learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic).

****Lesson Format***
1. Warm-up: Our daily warm up will consist of a review of phonologic and phonemic awareness skills to get learners thinking about letter and syllable sounds.
2. Direct Instruction: Each week learners will work through decoding a set of target closed syllable words that follow the VC/CV or V/CV pattern. Students will get explicit instruction in how to break apart some of the target words into syllables. We will discuss the word meanings and use the words in context in sentences as we go.
3. Practice: Learners will be given target words to break apart into syllables on their own to decode them.
4. Extend: Learners will write sentences using target words from the lesson.

Hello Outschool Families!
I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to teach and connect with learners here on Outschool. With 14 years of teaching experience, I’ve had the privilege of working with students of all ages in a variety of settings.

I began my teaching journey working as a substitute teacher at the elementary level while taking classes to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Social Studies Education. After earning my degree, I taught 10th-grade World History at a large public school in South Florida. Teaching history was a dream come true, and I loved every moment of it! At the end of my fourth year teaching high school, my husband's job transferred him to Virginia where I began working as a lead teacher at a preschool over the summer. I thought teaching preschool was just going to be a summer job, but it turned out that I fell in love with the littles and teaching early literacy and reading.

After the birth of my daughter, I transitioned to online teaching. I’m grateful for the flexibility it offers—both for my students and myself. One of the best parts of teaching on Outschool is connecting with learners from all over the world.

Teaching is my passion, no matter the platform being used. There is nothing quite like seeing learning "click" for a student and watching them begin to excel on their own. My favorite topics to teach are history as well as early literacy, reading, and writing. I'm an avid reader myself and it brings me great joy to see my students get as excited about reading as I do!

I look forward to meeting your child and joining them on their learning journey. I hope to see you in class soon!
