Class Experience

Over fifty years ago, Japanese violinist Shinichi Suzuki became aware of the fact that children all over the world over learn to speak their native language easily. The fundamentals of language acquisition to the learning of music, and named his method the mother-tongue approach. Some of the ideas include parent responsibility, consistent repetition, and loving encouragement.

Suzuki based his method on the idea that “Musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability, just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited.”

I break down each of the lessons into small sections so that learners can not only practice listening to the music first, but also correct fingering, technique, note names, rhythms, sight reading, and coordination of both hands. I also encourage humming and singing the melody. Furthermore, I use YouTube recordings of each piece of music in the book to aid in this process.

Since these are private lessons, I work with each learner wherever they are at in the book. There will be no eating during this class.

I will wait 10 minutes for arrival. Please contact me if you don’t see a time that fits your schedule so that we can coordinate a time that will work.

Learning Goals

The goal is for learners to complete the book while getting enjoyment out of playing the piano.

Parental Guidance
Because I require the use of YouTube recordings on the learner’s device so there won’t be a delay to assist with this class, parents must be responsible for their child’s viewing.
Supply List
I have included a pdf download of the book for enrolled learners located at the bottom of the welcome post. The YouTube link I have provided is a playlist of the audio files that match the music. I recommend that learners either print out the PDF of the book and bring a pencil or upload it to a free program such as Microsoft One Note on tablet or an iPad to use a stylus pen. It is also necessary to have a piano or proper keyboard. If using a keyboard, one with semi-weighted keys is preferable. Also, it should either be placed on a stand or a piece of furniture such as a table in such a manner so the learner can comfortably reach the keys with proper posture while sitting on a chair or piano bench with both feet flat on the floor.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I’ve been using my voice for as long as I can remember. I grew up reading stories to my brother and sister especially since we joined the reading program at the local library. I was introduced to Aesop’s Fables, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, the poetry of Shel Silverstein, and so much more. It wasn’t long after that I started singing, dancing, and acting professionally in regional and dinner theater in Orange and Los Angeles County, California.

When I was a featured performer in the productions for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, I was influenced by the musicians on the cruise ships to start listening to all kinds of music. However, It was the mesmerizing combination of melodies and lyrics that captivated me most and perpetually altered my perspective. I wanted to share my own stories in that medium. Fortunately, I was encouraged to further my studies in songwriting, composition, and audio engineering so that I could write and record my own music. As a result, I went on to receive my BA in Music Technology from California State University, Dominguez Hills where I also completed my single subject teaching credential in Music. I continue to teach private music lessons and provide my performance services for restaurants, country clubs, churches, private parties, and weddings in Southern California. I have also had a residency as a solo singer and pianist at the XIV Hakone Rikyu in Hakone, Japan.

I started using my voice not only to speak about music, but about all the things that matter to me by providing voiceover, collaborating on copy, and writing commercial jingles for small businesses whose innovations consciously contribute to a happier, healthier, and more sustainable world.

How can I help elevate your child’s story to the next level?
