Assignments

Projects
Two projects throughout the class that reflect the building of content and that allow the learner to apply the content to their own applications. Midterm Project--learners will create a permaculture garden blueprint for their (real or fake) land lot, a high-level budget estimating costs for the development of each zone, and a short 1-2 page research paper outlining their choices for their blueprint design and budget. Final Project--learners will build upon the blueprint and estimated budget they created in the midterm project to create a presentation detailing the intricacies of their permaculture garden plan, including but not limited to: blueprints, budgets by garden zone, potential issues and forward-thinking to prevent these issues; and any profit-making ventures that they plan to do with their permaculture garden.
Mastery Evaluation
Two untimed quizzes reviewing content from 2-3 weeks of lessons. Each quiz consists of 10 multiple choice and true/false questions, and can be taken 2 times (only the highest score will be kept for each quiz).

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 12
Beginner Level
Welcome to "Sustainable Sprouts: Permaculture Made Simple!"

In this exciting and hands-on course, your teen will dive into the world of permaculture garden design! We'll cover everything from the history and theory of permaculture to real-life applications like designing eco-friendly garden blueprints and learning how to sustain them. Each week, we’ll focus on fun and practical topics such as planning, budgeting, and even exploring ways to turn garden products into profit!

The class is fully online and self-paced, giving students the flexibility to learn at their own speed while staying on schedule with engaging activities like quizzes, small projects, and reflection essays. I’ll be with them every step of the way through interactive discussions, feedback on projects, and online office hours for any questions.

My teaching style focuses on creating a supportive and engaging environment, mixing slides, discussions, and project-based learning to keep things dynamic and fun. Plus, I’m always available for extra help or 1-on-1 chats to make sure each student gets the most out of their experience.

If you’d like to learn more or discuss any specific accommodations, feel free to reach out. I can’t wait to help your teen become a permaculture pro!

Syllabus

8 Lessons
over 8 Weeks
Lesson 1:
Introduction to the course and course expectations
Introduction to the course set up, expectations for participation, and submit a short response detailing your experience in gardening and why you are interested in this topic.
Lesson 2:
Introduction to Permaculture Design History, Theory, and Application
This lesson will cover the very basics of permaculture design theory, from its history and development in the 1960's and 1970's, to the core values of the design theory, as well as examples of its successful applications across the world. In this lesson, learners will take a 10-question multiple choice and true/false quiz reviewing the content of the lesson, and will submit a short reflection essay on their connections to the course content thus far.
Lesson 3:
Design & Planning of Ecologically-Sound Permaculture Gardens
This lesson will expand on the permaculture design theory introduced in Lesson 2. Learners will gain the skills and expertise needed to develop their own blueprints and general budget for a permaculture garden.
Lesson 4:
Midterm Project
As the midpoint of this course, learners will use this week to develop a blueprint for a permaculture garden, using either a real or imaginary plot of land.
