The RMS Titanic: the “unsinkable” ship that sank and claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people. But what about the survivors of this tragic incident? Who were they? How did they survive? What were their backgrounds, and what happened to them after the Titanic met its fatal end? In this course, students will learn the answers to the questions above as we explore the stories of some of the survivors of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. This class is designed to teach students about life before and after the Titanic for some of the people who lived to tell the tale. Students will learn about passengers who travelled in the first, second and third classes, taking a look specifically at the passengers’ histories prior to boarding and after surviving the Titanic. Students will be provided with detailed descriptions and original photographs to understand key facts and ideas regarding that fateful night. Furthermore, students will be encouraged to compare and contrast the survivors’ lives prior to and after the sinking of the Titanic. The goal of this course is to provide students with background information to 1. give insight into Titanic survival stories, and 2. inspire students to continuously dig deeper to learn more about fascinating historical events and the people who lived through them. All in all, this class will be highly interactive, with the majority of the work happening in the here-and-now of the class session. By the time this class is over, students will have a deeper understanding of the sinking of the Titanic and the people who lived through it.
